Sorta like one of my stories, except it's not mine.
One of the horses that won silver in the equestrian jumping event is named "Special Ed."

Just wanted to put that out there.

    So, Otakon
Well, it was quite an interesting almost-week:
I started on Wednesday morning, flying into BWI. I ended up in DC around 6pm, and Raszama, ibid32, Joe, and I all went to get dinner at the nearby Japanese place run by Koreans. I had Hwe Dup Bap (Like Chirashizushi, but less veggies and a spicy sauce). It was acceptable; I would have liked a bit more variety in the fish and more roughage. The fish WAS quite fresh, so no complaints there. We stayed up the entire night (up until 5pm) playing the Order of the Stick board game. Man, was that a mistake.
The next day, we woke up at the bright and early 11:30am. Raszama had already left for work, so Joe and I got into the city just in time to eat lunch at ...I think it was called B&M. The food was good, and we indulged in a dessert platter, which made me really happy. We had crab artichoke dip, I ate some fish and rice (meh) and the desserts were a creme brulee garnished with berries, a chocolate torte with a whipped topping and strawberries and a raspberry sauce, and a cheesecake garnished with blueberries and caramel sauce. Cheesecake...yeah...
    ...
Joe and I then went to the spy museum. Man, I suck at writing right now; writing science paper really drained my ability to write in complex sentences and such. Anyways, a lot of the exhibits were really interesting: I especially liked the bits on wiretapping and...other stuff.

We then mooched a ride off of raszama back to DC, where we stood in line for an hour for prereg. I thought there would be no line, but man, I guess Otakon was really popular this year. Afterwards we dropped off our stuff, and I got to meet Joe's roommates, who gave off creepy Otaku vibe in spades. We then got dinner at the first nice-ish restaurant that we saw. And it wasn't until Joe looked at the wine list that we realized that we were in yet another B&M's. It was pretty good though.

The next day was the start of Otakon. I waited outside with Joe in line (as he wasn't preregistered) for some 3 hours. The people behind us were asshats and smelled, and it was hot, and we were slightly bored, but the people watching was fun and overall we had an ok time in line.

Otakon itself...it was ok, I guess. They weren't showing a lot of anime that I was interested in, they cancelled a few things that we wanted to go to, and the one thing that we were really pumped about (the Phoenix Wright Mock Trial) ended up filling up. Also, there were big lines at everything, and the people in the video game room were also somewhat assholeish about playing longer than they should've. Man, I heard a lot of stories from Roxy later about the incredible stupidity level of a lot of these people, and it made me wonder about how I should feel identifying as a nerd/geek type, if I'm going to be grouped with these people. I suppose it doesn't matter because it's one of those labels that has a lot of variance in perception, but it makes me cringe just a bit...
Some highlights were that I got to play pop 'n music (tons of fun), won free yaoi and got to watch attractive boys make out at the yaoi panel, and bought 3 of the beatmania games, which officially spells the end of my graduate career.

The best part about the weekend was schmucking around when it was at least 3 people (Joe and I discovered that we've more or less run out of things to talk about with each other); playing video games or eating or baking or playing board games or walking around or talking about stuff. While Otakon itself was ok, the weekend overall went pretty damn well.

Oh, and I ate veal 3 days in a row. Adam, in my lab, feels that eating veal is good for the environment because: veal calves move less and are killed earlier, so contribute less to CO2/methane emissions. And, you have to kill more of them to get them same amount of meat, so you're killing even MORE calves, which further cuts down the time they get to spend farting. I find all of these arguments perfectly rational and agree with them. Also, veal hardly receives any advertisement, so increasing veal consumption doesn't encourage big beef to spend more money on advertising, which kills trees and such. He even made a slogan: "save the planet: eat veal."

My roommate has left 2 sinkfuls of unwashed dishes and a pile of poorly washed dishes in the drying
rack and the kitchen counters and floors are a mess and it only took 2 nights from clean-ish.

    My life
    -My pee smells like antibiotics
-I just watched DK w/ Alice and John. It was good.
-I still have no positive results in my research, but I just found another idea that'll give me something to do until everybody else in my group gets back.
-I've been taking swimming group classes. I don't feel any more fit, but at least my stroke technique is good now.
-My probation report is due in less than a month. I really wish I had something to write about in it.
-I'm going to Otakon in about a week. I'm a little worried about taking time off right now, but dammit, I've never been to any kind of con before, and I'm looking forward to dressing up like Kita Kita Oyaji and singing bad j-pop.

    How nice.
I was at Radio Shack. I wanted replacement silicon earbud cover thingummys, after some people had lost a set and I'd lost another 1.5 sets, and my newer headphones had just crapped out.
The last time I went, the guy working there told me that they were out of stock right now, but that they would be getting another shipment soon. The guy working today told me that those would be a special order.
Then the woman who was working there heard and offered to give me the ones that she doesn't like (the big size, which is my second favorite). How nice!
She also asked me what kind of cell provider I had, to sell me a cell (chuckle). I have TMobile, which they don't carry phones for, so she just let me go. But how nice!

An Update: Arc melting is sometimes very rewarding, but it's always an ordeal.

Telling people about my life is fun!
So, I had that pie-off. I lost. Our pies were very different (I'd say her pie approached a tart), but both were very tasty. Ah well, c'est la vie.
Also, I've been reading random articles to keep up on knowledge. I decided to use wikipedia (because quite frankly, the knowledge there is already enough to keep me busy, and the things I'm reading about are pretty agreed upon), and I drifted. Particle physics is hilarious. Quarks? Flavors? Colors? Strange and Charmed? Whoever thought that science could be so...whimsical?
I was also taught another lab technique. That totally adds another tool to my repertoire, one very useful that I could've used a while ago ^_^ Hooray for potential results!

I don't know why, but I have to use the pooper a lot today. I didn't even eat all that much fiber yet. No wait, that's a lie. btw, did I tell you that I'm on a special diet? It involves drinking only grapefruit juice or water in the morning, eating a prune before lunch, and when possible, eating a prune before dinner. I don't know if there are going to be results (mostly because I made it up), but hopefully with swimming classes and the hot summer, I'll be in better shape at the end of it ^_^

    WINNING
So...wow, winning looks really bizarre all capitalized like that.
    Anyways,

This weekend I went to visit [info]metallian and [info]mrsmetallian. [info]alecsandyr and [info]derrygodo were also there. I brought a brownie trifle, which was well received, played a bunch of rock band, ate tasty tasty BBQ, went to Summerfest and shmucked around, and bought a ton of books (Maison Ikkoku, TORG, and Terry Pratchett, if you know/care).
    WIN!

Upon reaching Chicago, I decided to hop on a bus, just in case the trains were running on different tracks. I didn't get home until 11, so I couldn't bake my pie.
    FAIL!

I woke up really late and didn't get to work until 11.
    MORE FAIL!

But I had this really scary dream. Not scary as in "wah, nightmare," but "apocalyptic war that plays like a movie with me in it" dream. I could've remembered what was actually going on if I had written in down upon waking, but I didn't feel like it. The side I was on was losing.
    RADICAL DUDE!

Upon finishing work, I got home. I started on my pie (which is going well...so far) and I made my first stir fry in my wok. It took me a month to use my own wok.
    SO MUCH FAILING!

It was the most bizarre thing. Brace yourself: Konyaku, Shiitake mushroom, onion garlic soy sauce. And it tasted great!
THE SQUARE OF THE HYPOTENUSE IS EQUAL TO THE SUM OF THE SQUARES OF THE OTHER SIDES!

We will see how this pie turns out.
    TH-TH-TH-TH-TH-TH-TH-TH-THAT'S ALL FOLKS!

    Just a quick update
last night, I had a dream. I forgot a good majority of it, but I DO remember at one point, we were being attacked by a plant, and we all escaped, and later they discovered what looked like a little thorn in my skin, but pulling it out revealed that it had grown inside my skin, to about the length of...2 inches. Of variable width, ending in a point. It basically looked like a green, poorly-rolled joint.
Then we all panicked when we saw we all had these, and I pulled out a good 6 more of variable width, including a long one about 5 inches long. None of these were covered in blood or anything; just the wound around it had already healed.
...Then slightly later in the dream, I noticed I had forgotten to notice some in my foot, so I pulled those out. These were huge, still tiny at the point but opening up hollowly to as much as 4 inches in diameter, and inside the wound were hairy (like the way some plants have spine-looking things that are actually hairs) green ovoids the size of cherry tomatoes, which we had to pull out. Serious grossness.
Throughout the whole affair my foot was just kinda numb. But seriously, I couldn't've had any bone structure or anything left in my foot at that point.
...This would be really great for some horror game...

    A meme, from [info]copyrightkary
    So, this is the drill:

1.Leave me a comment saying anything random, like your favorite lyric to your current favorite song. Or your favorite kind of sandwich.
    Something random. Whatever you like.
    2. I respond by asking you five personal questions so I can get to know you better.
    3. You will update your LJ with the answers to the questions.
    4. You will include this explanation and offer to ask someone else in the post.
    5. When others comment asking to be asked, you will ask them five questions.

And here're the ones I got:

    1. If you could be a master of one thing what would it be?
I'd like to be a master of magic powers. I mean, being able to shoot fire and produce ice and heal wounds? Sweet! Also, I want Slayers-style magic, none of this "oh no I cast a spell and now I have to rememorize it" nonsense.
What? In real life you say? Oh.
    ...
...I'm tempted to say, "in bed," but I think I'm going to go with being a master pianist. Seriously, Sex-E.

    2. What was your favorite tv show growing up?
Ooh...Sailor Moon, I'd have to say. Although I really really loved Animaniacs and Tiny Toons and Ducktales and anything in that vein...but really, I just got the most mileage out of watching Sailor Moon.

    3. What is the scariest thing you've ever seen in real life?
I've lived a fairly quiet life, surprisingly, so I guess it would have to be the pile of dead clowns in my basement. I mean shirtless [info]raszama.
Ok, ok, for reals,...the scariest thing I've seen is heights. While I'm not terrified of them in general, being in a car spinning out of control on ice and ending a mere 4 feet from a drop makes mountain roads a good deal scarier. Especially that one.

    4. Are you embarrassed to be known as an American?
Not very, honestly. While we're subject to some of the most incompetent governments in our history, and the scary scary people in the far right have made themselves well known, I just love the American conveniences we are spoiled by (all the things that are changing too, like cheap food and gas and cars everywhere) to be embarrassed to be an American. It would almost seem ungrateful when I drive 3 blocks over to the grocery store to buy a steak and a quart of milk. That being said, I AM embarrassed by the government, and especially the laws and the values that those laws imply. Like "science is unimportant" and "rich people aren't rich enough."

    5. How big is your katamari?
Huge. It's also sticky and covered by my junk. And it's green.
    ...HULK ROLL!!!

A weekend of an up and down.
So this weekend, I went to up Columbus, Ohio to visit RSL. At the time I had made this plan with him, I was also in contact with [info]raszama and JBW to have them come over and surprise him with our combined presence.
It was a very pleasant surprise.
I can't remember the exact figure, but over the course of 2 nights and 2 days, we played about 27 hours of D&D. Thanks, [info]raszama!
While I was there, I received a call from my roommate telling me that someone had stolen the back wheel off of my bike. While I was in Ohio, I could cheerily ignore this. Now, however, I must deal with it (time to spend more money), and all the other shit that I put off until now (mostly health insurance crap and writing a paper and grading stuff). Life procrastination banzai!
I'm also running on about 15 hours of sleep over the past 3 days, 2 of it really crappy. (And if you're wondering, yes, we spent very little time on not D&D and not sleeping, about 8 hours. A good majority of that was spent eating RSL's dad's cooking/lying around groaning at how full we were). I mean, it was totally worth it, but I'm not at all ready for this week.

    These dreams...
    Here's another one.
It was the day before thanksgiving, and for some reason it was going to be just me and my brother on the day of (my parents were leaving for something or another). Also interesting to note was that "home" in this dream did not at all resemble any of the homes I'd lived in...must be some weird effect of not having lived at home in a long time, and my parents having moved a lot.
    Moving along.
It was the day of, and for some reason, WE DIDN'T HAVE THE FOOD I WAS SUPPOSED TO PREPARE! Of course, this is the part I remember best. I had been thinking about making pumpkin pie, fried mashed potato balls, and I was thinking about a cranberry sauce pie, but then thought how much better it would be to make a cranberry sauce coffee cake.
Things get a little bit fuzzy at that point, and the next thing I remember is a high speed chase in the city, attempting to follow Steven Swayne (who was a gnome or something, of the magic, garden variety), and there were tall buildings that we knocked down, and at the end we traced him to an animal fancier's party, taking place at a small city building and the surrounding lawn area. He was in the center of the grassy lawn, and didn't try to run away when we approached him. It kinda looked like he had been peeing, but he wasn't when we actually got there; just standing and facing away.
Oddly enough, this dream happened during a nap (it went over by 1 1/2 hours...I was planning on going swimming or something when I woke up), but now I really really want to make a cranberry coffee cake and have fried potato balls for dinner (I'm quite hungry right now). But it's not anywhere near Thanksgiving (not that the potato balls are thanksgiving...here I mean the cake). But then again, I DO have a can of cranberry sauce (make that 3), and they expire at the end of next month...

    ...
I'll get back to y'all later.

    Story of my day
So I woke up this morning, and it was raining, and I had an appointment at the optometrist (I go there because Luke... '96 works there ^_^) but when I got outside, I found that my back tire on my bike was flat. So I had to hoof it in (actually, fairly light) rain. I got there 10 minutes late, and the doc said "you have to have your contacts on for 30 minutes, so no doing stuff for you," and I hadn't put on my contacts, so that sucked. Then I went to campus, fortunately managing to catch the campus shuttle, and got in time to learn how to use the SEM to perform EDX on my crystals. I was pretty excited that one of my crystals came up as possibly being exactly what I wanted, but I'm trying to be not too excited because it might be a false positive from contamination.
After that, I ate lunch and went to talk by someone in my group. It was a good talk, and afterwards a few of us (read: half the group) chatted about his going to a wedding and how it was far and he was going to get there late, and it was nice. I feel like I got slightly closer to them, although both of the people I was talking to are graduating this year (one's an undergrad/masters and is coming here for her Ph.D, and the other is a 4th year soon to graduate).
Then, I went to schmuck around on the internet, then went to a class which had an exam (since I was just auditing, it was odd being sort of passive, but not really, because I was thinking "hmm.. that I could've done...that I could've done...that I would've missed completely. Good thing I'm not taking the class ^-^"
After that, I went home and after a bit, took my bike over to the bike shop where they replaced the wheel (apparently they had been slashed with a knife or something) and told me that I took crap care of my bike (not in as many words, of course), and then I rode my bike home and JUST THEN it started raining buckets. Like, at first a drizzle, then all of a sudden BIG FAT DROPS coming down at high velocity (but not especially high density) and I got soaked. But it had been the kinda humid-before-the-storm, and the sun was still peeking out behind the rain clouds, so the utter wetness I underwent wasn't too bad.
Now I've gotten home, am downloading Electric Six (I may actually buy one of their CDs, something I haven't done in a long time), and am drinking an asahi super dry. It tasted pretty good, but halfway through it started getting an aftertaste of Korean style boiled pig intestine. Which I actually somewhat enjoyed. Probably because I immediately preceded the drinking of said beer with eating of dark chocolate Quadratini.

...It's been one of those days.

    Doing absolutely nothing
So, despite being unproductive on the work front, I'm feeling satisfied with the way today went:
I packed my lunch instead of buying it like I do much too often now.
I went to a useless class and a not useful but mentally stimulating class.
I bought and read The Last Hero.
I played some DDR and did some pushups and stretches.

I think within the next couple of weeks I'm going to start swimming again. I can't find my goggles (which is odd) so I guess I'll have to buy a new pair but I'm nonetheless excited about that.
Now if only I could get my reactions to work...

    bitch
My roommate is such a slob.
Ok, he's not really a slob. but he is. Does a shit job of washing his dishes when he does them (which is about once a week), his room smells funny, he leaves little fuzzballs from his blanket around the apartment and in the bathroom (how do they even get there?), he clips his toenails and bits of it get all over the living room, he tracks in grit and grime, he makes a mess all over the stovetop and counter and takes weeks to clean it, never takes out the trash, never cleans the bathroom, never cleans the sink after he's shaved and left hair and sometimes blood on it, never ever cleans the kitchen sink even after he's left a thick foam of grease and food in it, never puts the papers he brings in into the trash, leaves dirty plates lying around the living room, manages to break something about once every two months, leaves food to rot in the fridge (which I do too sometimes, to be fair), leaves the lights on when he leaves or goes to bed, leaves pubic hair in the bathtub...
...ok, I'm running out of steam. I think I've got most of it. Honestly, he's a pretty decent guy, but I'm running out of patience for living with him. Although he upsets me a good deal less than the people upstairs or downstairs.
...Then again, the rugrats upstairs are being annoying slightly less often, and the people downstairs haven't had their music up at an indecent hour for several weeks now. Maybe now that things that really bothered me are less prominent, slightly less bothersome things are in the forefront of my consciousness.

Oh, and my window's leaking again. The management people are nice, but seem kinda useless.

Also, my reactions all failed. But that's not at all surprising. Only slightly disheartening; I'm sure I'll feel much worse after having nothing come out of the third round of reactions.

I haven't gotten any in a while, either. Any physical contact, really, would be nice. Especially a massage.
